February, 2004 brought us a new series
of paintings by gallery hostess Kimmie
Hutchins. In Hutchins’ previous
works, dark-eyed characters lounge amidst huge fantasy flowers,
rooms are wallpapered with adhesive alphabets, and robots and giant
bees conduct mysterious transactions with a semi-autobiographical
heroine in striped socks.
The new series is drawn around the central theme of Lewis Carroll’s
Alice in Wonderland. In these paintings, Hutchins’ draws inspiration
from Carroll’s classic, where characters from the novel are
recreated in a slightly twisted fashion unique to Hutchins’
style. In one painting, Alice shies away from the love of a hookah–smoking
caterpillar; in another Alice “paints the roses red”
with her own blood.
This is Hutchins’ third show in Portland, and promises to
be the beginning of a wildly successful career. Don’t miss
this exhibition! |
