november 3rd, 05 Underfaces new paintings by jan dworkin The face is my excuse to play with colors and shapes. It's basic form distracts my conscious mind while my brush makes marks on canvas or paper. I try to catch an essence, reveal what the Buddhists call "the face behind the face" or "the face before you were born." A spirit that exists outside of consensus reality, outside of space and time... |
october 3rd, 05Dayan Morgan-Sylvaen Broken People The images in this show explore the things we keep hidden, those parts of ourselves that are vulnerable, the parts that make us feel shame. The parts that once confronted leave us stronger, whole... |

4th,05Brandon Buerkle silkscreens and collages Brandon Buerkle's Christ-centered Quaker background influences this series of pieces about small things we can do on a day-to-day basis to make the world a better place. Unique mixtures of collage and acrylic, as well as screen prints on canvas, portray the contemporary liberal activist values we've come to expect of the young left, backed by the Biblical mandates typically ignored by the Christian right. |

mendezPepper Gallery presents the darkly quaint cartoons of Rachel Mendez. Straddling the barbed-wire fence between cartoons and painting, Mendez drags the one art form into the other. Characters like a dog reading her palm while her city burns come to life in these encaustic paintings. Disturbing images of a woman's body as a piggy bank, being threatened by a hammer, and placid faces against apocalyptic backdrops populate these works. |

hicks a menagerie of mixed media art cards that dictate from a point in my fine arts and graphic arts career. delicate and unusual, these cards have been printed, handcrafted, adhered and persuaded onto quality, acid-free paper, and contain resonant images that have percolated through my sketchbooks and graphic process to re-present themselves here: tangible evidence of a process in motion. |

gravesThese oil paintings are a mixture of landscape-inspired works, as well as improvised images that borrow from the landscape. Particular attention was paid to creating spaces but also allowing the paint to exist as itself on the surface of the canvas. |
